Skill Development Mission – The country has to reap the maximum out of the country’s demographic dividend as the working age population reached to 77.5 crore (may peak 95 crore in 2026).the dividend can be illusory if the workforce doesn’t acquire the skills to support a knowledge and technology driven economy. Hence, there is the compelling need to launch a world-class skill development programme, in mission mode that will address the challenge of imparting the skills required by a growing economy. Both the structure and the leadership of the mission must be such that the programme can be scaled up quickly to cover the whole country. The budget 2008-09 proposes to establish non- profit corporation and to entrust the mission to that corporation. The entity is expected to garner Rs 15000 core as capital from governments, the public and the private sector. As a beginning the Central government will contribute Rs 1000 towards equity to this corporation.
