NREGS: National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme

    NREGS: National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme – The NREGS was launched on 2nd of February 2006 at Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh. The NREGS is supported by the NREGP Act in September 2005 which ensures 100 days of employment for the rural household (by providing minimum wage). Now, the scheme has been extended to all rural areas of the country. More than 4.37 crore households were provided employment in 2008-09. An allocation of Rs 39100 crore has been made in the interim budget for 2009-10 as against Rs, 16000 crore in 2008-09 for NREGS.
